First off, let me explain the pictures which have been sent and help you understand my life this week a little better.
The first one is of our make shift bench that we have made and it is the most ghetto/fantastic thing that my mind could come up with. The weights on the bar are plate weights that are usually on weight machines, the ones you put the pins in and stuff. I taped those together in groups of five with army duck tape and they look so white trash and amazing. We are making the rack to put the bar on with a member who blacksmiths but then he randomly left to utah for two weeks on monday for his jousting business and won’t be back for two weeks. So we got two chairs in the basement and then stacked some blankets and rolled up sleeping bags to set the bar on. It’s too legit! but super scary when you put the bar back on the blankets and stuff because the bar sinks into all of that stuff and gradually keeps coming towards your face until it compresses the blankets and stuff enough and finally comes to a stop like an inch above your nose…it’ll be a blessing when we get the rack built haha
The other picture is just of a huge green grain field that just seems to be never ending. It is just such beautiful landscape and scenery up here that I take pictures of it sometimes. It reminds me of home and the farm and my ideal way of living which involves being in the outdoors as much as possible. The farm country out here is just ginormous and there are HUGE wheel lines that are on a pivot in the center of the field everywhere! I LOVE it!
The last picture is of me and my companion in our little trailer that we stayed in on saturday night. It was pretty freaking hilarious. We went out to Bow Island that we cover but it’s 45 minutes away and we only can have members drive us out there so we don’t get out there too much. But we had to stay in a members trailer because the family had there daughter return from her mission so we aren’t allowed to stay in the house with her…anyway. As soon as I saw the trailer I was so excited and so was my companion. I was totally imagining the movie 8 seconds when we walked up to it though. I could just see Lane Frost telling his wife (I can’t remember her name!! I’m So embarrassed!! I usually can remember everything from movies but this mission is changing me!!) that they’re gonna live in that trailer and she’s all whining and in shock. haha I love that movie. I was thinking of how cheesy the girl was when they ride up in the mountains to that pretty piece of land and he’s pointing out where they’ll build the corrall and the house and everything and then he says that they’ll put the trailer right next to the house and she says “Please tell me you’re making a joke lane” Lane “yes honey it’ll go right over there next to the fence” wife “Lane…” Lane “Yes honey I’m making a joke” haha
So then the rest of the night that we were in there I was thinking of that movie and laughing to myself. But yeah, so then it rains, thunders and lightnings that whole night and just shakes the trailer and we have the windows open to cool down but the wind was just whistling through the screens. We were just all full of adrenaline though because I was freaking myself out with the shadow that was being cast through the windows and on the wall. It was a tree being blown in the wind but it was just all whispy and scary and I would scream like a little girl every once and a while. Then i turned on the light above my head and there were like 5 moths just freaking out and that made me scream! So my companion came in and was swatting at them forever and then he hit his head really hard on a cabinet and I was just dying laughing and couldn’t stop and it was just a great night haha
But back to serious business, Dwayne is getting baptized this week!! Saturday is the day and he’s quit smoking (hopefully he doesn’t relapse with satan working on him) He’s so excited and plans on getting the priesthood soon and getting his woman that’s coming up from the states baptized and her 18 year old daughter. He also plans on marrying her and so we’ll see what order all of that happens in! I’m so excited! The Gospel is changing him so much and will bring such great changes in his life! He feels like a celebrity when he goes to church because of how much people talk to him and it makes me so happy to see the smile on his face when he talks about it. He loves the Gospel and that love will help him in staying away from smoking.
Rita hasn’t been able to meet with us because her family has been in town and she’s been on “vacation”. But we call her Tuesday and should get an appointment with her. I just know that if we can meet with her more regularly that she’ll commit to a date for baptism. She’s a great lady and is headed in the right direction.
Greg Campbell has been out of town but we hope to teach him again this week.
The work is going great even though we got a lot of cancellations this week. Things look good for the future.
The pictures of the baby shower look so good!!! Ah!! It’s so colorful and I just want to eat all of it!! ( I’m a sucker for buying anything that’s shiny or colorful) Kelsie, You, and Jessie look so dang pretty!! Austen looks….great as always:) That looks like it was a lot of fun!
I’m so glad to hear about everyone’s different successes. Tell Jessie to continue tearing it up on the court and to not get skin cancer before she’s 17 haha Connor sounds like he’s doing well and should be in the NFL in no time. Trav is making money as always and sounds like he should watch out for doors or sharp objects. You might want to “baby proof” the house for both Trav and Aspyn haha I hope that dad sleeping in my room because it’s cooler isn’t just an excuse for a fight you two had and so now he’s in the doghouse hahahaha but I’m so glad to hear that you’re doing okay mom and I’m so glad that you continue to write me! I Love you and the rest of the family and you’re all in my prayers! God Bless!
Yeupp it’s me,
It was a great week in the Medicine Hat/ Bow Island area of the Canada Calgary mission haha…that was really descriptive. The Timpview soccer coach emailed me and we’ll see if we can see him on Tuesday but chances are slim. I’m pretty sure we only picked up one new investigator since I talked to you last week and I’ll tell you about that whole story.
Dwayne wasn’t able to give up smoking completely so we’re still working with him. He has a date set for the 30th which he set himself this time when we recomitted him to baptism. He really wants to get baptized but just needs to quit this bad habit. Rita cancelled on us this whole week because of work and family problems but came to church Sunday! I could tell that she really enjoyed it and now she’s been 4 times! We’re supposed to meet with her this week! (if she doesn’t cancel) I’m sure that she’s going to get baptized if we can just get some more meeting with her to talk and teach her some more. She’s just so busy!! We met with the Campbell family this week. Only the husband though because the wife is kinda afraid of change and stuff but he’s super interested and sincere which is great. He’s super busy as well though and does crazy long bike trips and stuff like that randomly so it’ll be hard to get return appointments consistently. But we went over the plan of salvation with him and he is just a really great man who likes to serve other people and loves his family. I really hope his wife doesn’t hold him back and that the whole family will be able to be converted and sealed eventually. The other family I mentioned (CJ and Jeremy) we were able to meet with. Like I said they’re really nice to the elders and have gone to church and church activites a lot in the past. They love the mormons but just won’t join. The wife found some random church that she likes going to, so he goes with her. He is a very “logical” thinker and can’t wrap his head around the thought of God yet. But we’re trying to build him from the ground up on religion and continuing doing service for them and hope that we’ll be able to prepare them to convert in the near future. All we can do is work as hard as we can and pray for them but some people just aren’t ready to fully receive the message of the Gospel in their lives as the time. That’s a hard concept sometimes because I just want people to start living the Gospel RIGHT NOW and start seeing the blessings that come from it. But everone is different and are at different places in their lives. The heat isn’t unbearable out here by the way, I love it! I feel like branding cows in the middle of the day and Price football camp has prepared me well haha But yeah, it hasn’t gotten nearly as hot as those experiences so I feel very blessed. Oh yeah! The new investigator. He’s 17 and is over in Bow Island. We got called to go over and meet with him and a 18 year old boy who brought his mom. Well he didn’t really bring her but she wanted to come because they’re Evangelists or Evangelicals or however you say it. Anyway, we taught them the first lesson and the mom stopped us after every single point about the restoration in lesson 1. She was super protective and pretty much doesn’t want her 18 year old son to keep meeting with us. The 17 year old isn’t from their family but is just friends with the son. He is super shy about answering questions and stuff. His name is Craig and he only joined a church a year ago and actually brought religion into his life. All of this stuff is still pretty new to him but he seemed interested. He went to church on Sunday and liked it I guess. Hopefully we can meet with him in the future.
Things sound good with Austen and Kelsie. Tell Kelsie that once the baby comes out she’ll lose like thirty pounds in the blink of an eye! haha I can’t wait to see the cute pictures from the baby shower!
I emailed Trav back and he sounds like he’s doing great and having fun!
Thats great that Connor and Cael are friends! They’re two really cute kids who seem pretty similar! That’s hilarious that they text so much!
It sounds like Jessie is doing great! I have a strong feeling that she’ll get some offers this year and am really excited to continue hearing about that! I hope her knee starts feeling better though, that definitely isn’t good that it continues swelling up like that! Knees are terrible, so hopefully it’s just aggravated.
That story with dad just made me sick. Fire is so scary when it’s out of control and especially since it was headed towards vehicles and valuable property! We didn’t get charged anything did we? That story reminded me of when the hay fell off the trailer in the canyon though! Me waking up to dad uttering swear words similar to the dad on the Christmas story haha that was super scary though and I can only imagine how scary that fire situation was.
I’m sorry to hear about the drought! I’ll be sure to pray for rain this week!
How are you doing mom? What are you up to? I get updates on almost everyone except you! Whats up with that? You’re the most important!
Anyways, I love you all and can’t wait to hear back next week. Good luck with everything this week!
Love Elder Jorgensen
P.S. Our investigator Dwayne has the exact same laugh as the crazy guy from Ireland on Braveheart. I almost die when he starts laughing when we talk to him. He even starts to look more and more like that actor the more I think about it haha It’s freaking hilarious that I made that connection this week haha
Mr. Noodle says hello!
The reason I start this letter off like that is because they don’t have top ramen out here. They have their equivilant which is called mr. noodle. I bought a few bags of it and it is…….TERRIBLE!! So gross, I took one bite and was mad at Canada for not just having Top Ramen! haha but yeah anyways….It’s been a great week! Kinda slow at times but there is potential everywhere!
I had a strong feeling after one of our dinners that we should go to a certain family that are former investigators. We went and knocked on their door and got invited in! That hadn’t happened for me yet! They are a cool couple with a cute little boy. They said that it was like we had heard them talking the day before because they were saying how they hadn’t seen the Elders in a few months! In my mind I was like “heck yes!! I was totally led by the Spirit!” but yeah they have been involved with the church a lot in the past I guess and had Elders over a lot. They just seem really friendly and like they should be members but I’m not sure what their hang up is. I’m thinking that the Elders in the past haven’t taught them very well or much at all hopefully. But I have a strong feeling that there’s a reason I had the impression to go there and that I will be able to help them understand the Gospel better. We meet with them this week so that’ll be super interesting to see what questions they may have and how much they’ve been taught and everything. We also picked up this family who seem like Golden investigators. It’s a cute little family with three little boys and how my companion contacted them seems pretty ideal. Right before I got out here they stopped by their house and the dad said how he was actually just reading about the book of mormon that day and was wondering how our church got started. I guess they gave the first lesson in like a half hour there on the front porch and he was really interested. They’re the Campbells and they have friends in the ward and just seem perfect! We got an appointment set up for tonight to meet with them to teach the Plan of Salvation! It’s gonna be great! But yeah, Dwayne the tattoo artist is supposed to get baptized this Saturday if he gave up smoking on Saturday. He’s been out of town and we can’t get a hold of him but there are members who are talking to him for us and he will be back on Tuesday and we’ll get to see him. I really hope he was able to kick smoking because that would mean my first baptism would be this Saturday!!!! Also, Rita from England is so close to being ready for baptism. She’s knows the truthfulness of our message and the Book of Mormon she just wants to be absolutely sure. She may be baptized the 23rd of this month, we meet with her tommorrow and will see where she’s at in her mind. The spirit is so strong when we taught her this last time and she recognizes that the feelings of the Spirit and that she’s feels calm, happy and like something inside her is pulling her towards being baptized!!! She couldn’t be anymore ideal of an investigator!!! Hopefully Satan doesn’t do anything drastic to stop her progress! But yeah, I’m continuing to learn more about the area and love it more and more everyday! Our apartment is in the basement of a member couple and they’re awesome. We have a pool table…I feel like I’ve told you this before but I don’t remember and am too lazy to check my other emails…but yeah it’s pretty nice. The beds are small and really creaky but you’re so tired out here that you could fall asleep on a rock covered in tacks. The members have been really good about feeding us dinner every night so that’s good. We make delicious bologna or tuna sandwhiches for lunch almost every day!haha We have a few dumbells and stuff and I have a plan to make a super “magyver” like weight bench. I’ll let you know how it goes haha but yeah we are actually in the hottest part of the mission. Medicine Hat gets the hottest in Calgary. It’s fine though. I love the weather out here though. It’s been ideal for my likings so far. And I’m just so thankful I didn’t serve in Austen’s mission of Tampa because I’d much rather be cold than hot. Just another reason the Lord knew I should be here. It is terrible to be in a shirt and tie in the heat.
Oh yeah mom, you should listen to the album “Nashville Tribute to the missionaries” and listen to the song Bless my Son. It’s a good tear jerker that me and my companion like to cry to at night haha but really it is a good song and probably can be found on youtube. I love all of you and can’t wait to hear back next week about everything that you guys are doing!!
Hola from Canadia!
So I’m here and I’m alive! The Lord honestly knows me so well because
this is definitiley THE PLACE for me! The landscape is so pretty here
and I can’t get over it. The clouds here are amazing. The landscape
is honestly like “Little House on the Prairie” status. There is a lot
of open land and farms and everything. I honestly think that we
should look into getting land here or at least visit as a family.
There are A LOT of red angus cows out here and they all look really
meaty and strong. I haven’t seen one black angus yet. oh yeah by the
way you should probably know where I am. My first area is Medicine
Hat! It’s a very small town feel and there’s a wide variety of people
here….Canadians are pretty weird…but I love them!!! I cover
Medicine Hat 1st ward and Bow Island first ward. My trainer is…..a
freaking stud!!! I honestly lucked out so much! His name is Elder
Ferrell and he is from Lone Peak. He played basketball there and is
honestly the best trainer that they had for our incoming group. He’s
been out here for just over five months and I don’t know where my
spirits would be right now if I didn’t end up with him. My patience
was definitley worn out with my last companionship and I hope that his
trainer has a thicker skin than me. It looks like we’ve got some
investigators set up for baptism but they still have a few issues to
resolve before hand but I could totally get quite a few baptisms in
this first transfer!! That would be insane! There’s a few things here
in Canada that I’m trying to get used to…like their money,
kilometers per hour, they write dates like this “31/ May/2012″…stuff
like that. The members here so far are fraking amazing! I hope that
you got the email from bro and sister Picket! They were my first meal
with a member family and they were absolutely awesome!…by the way
we’re not allowed to say words like awesome, or guys or legit or other
stuff like that…It’s really hard to get used to…but anyways that
family is awesome! They were planning on scaring me and pretending to
be non members and angry towards the missionaries but my companion
screwed the whole thing up when he said “Hi Brother Picket”…it was
pretty funny that they were gonna try and do that to me…I probably
would’ve cried though…haha Like I said before, I can’t get over how
beautiful the landscape is here! It reminds me of old westerns so
much. They had us write a post card our first night to our parents
but apparently mail takes like two or three weeks most of the time to
get to the states and so this email will arrive before it and a lot of
this stuff will be repeated in the post card. We are living in a
members basement and they are so cool. They have a Pomeranian dog
that is the cutest/coolest dog in the world. I totally want one when
I get home. He comes down stairs in the morning and plays with us
haha He’s just a little puff ball and so cool! President Archibald is
a pretty intimidating man but he’s a very inspired and great mission
president. Sister Archibald is a saint and the other missionaries say
that she would be translated already if it weren’t for her husband
haha Another reason the Lord knew I should be here is….THE CANDY!!!
There is so many new types of candy here!! and their chocolate and
everything tastes different! I just barely had Poutine at Costco and
it was GREAT!…but definitely makes you feel like crap afterwards…
The mailing address is at the mission office and mail gets there then
it gets given to us on Friday’s…if the AP’s see us…so letters come
few and far between, so I’d love it if people wrote and then those
letters would mean so much more because of the wait to get them. The
mailing address is…
Canada Calgary Mission
7044 Farrell Rd. SE
Calgary, AB T2H 0T2
But yeah my companion is probably the sickest Elder out here and I
have a feeling we’ll have a lot of success in our time together even
though we’re in a pretty tough area. There are humble people out here
that I know the Lord has prepared for me to teach so I’m super
excited! I would love to here how the family is doing and just get a
long email back if possible…I like to hear about the old world!
We had our weekly planning session today and it was so long and boring…
but we definitely made it more exciting than a normal missionary might…
we do it at the church to be in a better mindset and environment…so we spoke into the microphone
with great announcements..even though it was only me and my comp haha.
It was good hearing everyone’s voice at the airport and makes me
excited for Christmas! Hopefully Connor can dry up those tears by then
because he almost made me break down when he was talking…I’ve got a
weird heart like that..If I hear someone else crying or sad then I cry
too…I hope that’s a good thing! But not when I’m trying to be tough
in a public airport!haha I Love all of you so much! The church is
true and the scriptures are jam packed full of personal application
that can help anyone, anytime, anywhere! Love you!
